Thefollowingsectionsprovideastep-by-stepguidetoconfiguringtheTPA3116D2EVMfordevice evaluation. 2.1 Electrostatic Discharge Warning ManyofthecomponentsontheTPA3116D2EVMaresusceptibletodamagebyelectrostaticdischarge (ESD).UsersareadvisedtoobserveproperESDhandlingprecautionswhenunpackingandhandlingthe EVM,includingtheuseofagroundedwriststrapatanapprovedESDworkstation. Figure1.TPA3116D2EVMEvaluationModule 2.3 Power Supply Setup AsinglepowersupplyisrequiredtopoweruptheEVM.BecausemostofthepinsarePVCCcompliant, thePVCCsupplyalsocanbeusedtopowertheanalogsupply(AVCC)andcanbeusedtopullupthe logicpinsforshutdown(SD)controlandfaultdetection(FAULT).GVDDisaninternallygeneratedsupply fortheoutputFETsandalsoisusedtopowerthePLIMITvoltagedividercircuitontheEVM.PLIMITis GVDDcompliant,butnotPVCCcompliant.PLIMITalsocanbepoweredbyanexternalsupplyconnected tothePLIMITpin. Operation www.ti.com 2.4 Evaluation Mode Preparations 1. EnsurethattheexternalpowersourceissettoOFF. 2. Connecttheexternalregulatedpowersupplyadjustedfrom4.5Vto26VtothemodulePVCCand GNDbananajacks,takingcaretoobservemarkedpolarity. 2.5 Inputs and Outputs 1. ForaBTLconfiguration,connectaload(s)acrosstheoutputs(LEFT+andLEFT–)and(RIGHT+and RIGHT–).ForPBTLconfiguration,connectasingleloadfromoneoftheleft-speakerjackstooneof theright-speakerjacks,dependingonhowthefiltersareloaded. 2. Connectaudioinputs,eitherdifferentialorsingle-ended,totheLINandRINRCAphonograph(phono) plugsforBTLoperation.ForPBTLoperation,applyasingleinput,differentialorsingle-ended,tothe RINRCAphonoplugandtieINPLandINNLdirectlytoGround(withoutcapacitors). 2.6 Control Inputs Ensurethatthemodejumpers,AM0,AM1,AM2,R5,andR6aresetcorrectly,dependingonthedesired operatingstate.IfPBTLoperationisdesired,connectJP5andJP6toGND. 2.7 Power Up 1. Verifycorrectvoltageandinputpolarity,andturntheexternalpowersuppliesON.TheEVMbegins operation. 2. Adjusttheaudiosourceforthecorrectvolume. 2.8 Short-Circuit Protection and Automatic Recovery Feature TheTPA3116D2familyhasprotectionfromovercurrentconditionscausedbyashortcircuitontheoutput stage.TheshortcircuitprotectionfaultisreportedontheFAULTZpinasalowstate.Theamplifieroutputs areswitchedtoahighimpedancestatewhentheshortcircuitprotectionlatchisengaged.Thelatchcan beclearedbycyclingtheSDZpinthroughthelowstate.Ifautomaticrecoveryfromtheshortcircuit protectionlatchisdesired,connecttheFAULTZpindirectlytotheSDZpin.ThisallowstheFAULTZpin functiontoautomaticallydrivetheSDZpinlowwhichclearstheshortcircuitprotectionlatch.Insystems wherethepossibilityofapermanentshortfromtheoutputtoPVDDortoahighvoltagebattery(likeacar battery)canoccur;pulltheMUTEpinlowwiththeFAULTZsignalandaninvertingtransistortoensurea high-Zrestart.Pleaserefertothedatasheet(SLOS708)fortheapplicationcircuit. 4 TPA3116D2EVMEvaluationModule SLOU336B–February2012–RevisedDecember2013 SubmitDocumentationFeedback Copyright©2012–2013,TexasInstrumentsIncorporated
